First Touch
Your first touch determines what you can do next.
π What Is First Touch?
First touch is the way you control the ball when it reaches you.
A great first touch does more than simply stop the ball.
It prepares your next action.
A good touch can:
β Move the ball away from pressure
β Create space
β Set up a pass
β Prepare a shot
β Help you turn
β Give you more time
Your goal is not always to bring the ball directly underneath you.
Your goal is to put the ball where you want to play next.
β Elite Tip
Think about your next action before the ball arrives. Your first touch should solve the next problem.
π― How To Take A Great Touch
A controlled first touch starts with your body position.
Before the ball arrives:
β Scan the field
β Know where the pressure is
β Open your body when possible
β Move toward the ball
β Choose the correct surface of your foot
When the ball reaches you, relax your foot instead of fighting against the ball.
Allow the ball to move naturally in the direction you want.
The amount of cushioning depends on the speed of the pass.
A harder pass requires a softer touch.
β Elite Tip
Do not wait for the ball to hit you. Move your body to the ball and guide it into your next action.
π§ Where Should Your Touch Go?
The direction of your first touch should depend on the situation.
Pressure behind you?
Protect the ball or move it away from the defender.
Space ahead?
Take your touch forward and attack the space.
Defender approaching from the side?
Take your touch across your body or away from the pressure.
Time to pass?
Prepare the ball onto the correct foot.
There is no single perfect first touch.
The best touch is the one that gives you the best next action.
β Elite Tip
Your first touch should have a purpose. Never control the ball just because you can.
ποΈ Training Your Touch
First touch improves through repetition.
Start with simple touches, then gradually make the exercise harder.
Solo Training:
β Pass the ball against a wall
β Control it with your right foot
β Control it with your left foot
β Alternate inside and outside touches
β Take your first touch into space
Start slowly and focus on control.
As your technique improves, increase the speed of the pass.
β Elite Tip
Do not chase hundreds of careless touches. Make every repetition intentional and challenge yourself to control the ball into a useful position.
β‘ First Touch Drill
Use a wall or a teammate.
Stand about 5β8 meters away.
1. Pass the ball.
2. Scan before it returns.
3. Decide where your next touch should go.
4. Receive the ball with the correct foot.
5. Take the touch into space.
6. Pass again.
Complete 3 sets of 20 controlled touches with each foot.
As you improve, increase the passing speed and reduce the time between touches.
β Elite Tip
Practice the touch you actually need in a match. Control, scan, move, and playβnot just control the ball and stop.
π¨ Receiving Under Pressure
A first touch becomes more difficult when a defender is close.
That is when awareness becomes just as important as technique.
Before receiving:
β Check your shoulder
β Locate the defender
β Find your escape route
β Decide which foot to use
If pressure is coming quickly, protect the ball and take your touch away from the defender.
If there is space, attack it.
Your first touch should help you escape pressure instead of allowing the defender to control the situation.
β Elite Tip
Scan before the ball arrives. The player who knows what is coming has an advantage before the first touch even happens.
β½ Different Game Situations
Receiving a pass:
Take the ball onto the foot that gives you the best next option.
Turning:
Use your first touch to move the ball around the defender and into your path.
Attacking space:
Take a stronger touch forward and accelerate after it.
Under pressure:
Move the ball away from the defender and protect it with your body.
Preparing a shot:
Take the ball into a position where your next movement can be quick and controlled.
β Elite Tip
The best players make their first touch look simple because they already know what they want to do before the ball arrives.
