Acceleration

Learn how to explode from a standing position and reach speed quickly.

πŸš€ What Is Acceleration?

Acceleration is how quickly you increase your speed. In soccer, this is often more important than your maximum running speed because most actions happen over short distances.

A player with strong acceleration can:

βœ“ Beat a defender to the ball
βœ“ Create separation
βœ“ Close down an opponent
βœ“ Reach open space first
βœ“ React quickly to a loose ball

Acceleration comes from combining body position, force, coordination, and explosive movement.

⭐ Elite Tip

Do not think about running fast immediately. Think about pushing powerfully into the ground and building speed with each step.

🧍 Starting Position

Your first steps begin before you move. A strong starting position allows you to produce force immediately.

Before accelerating:

βœ“ Keep your knees slightly bent
βœ“ Stay on the balls of your feet
βœ“ Lean slightly forward
βœ“ Keep your body relaxed
βœ“ Be ready to push

Avoid standing completely upright. A slight forward position helps you move into your first step instead of wasting time getting started.

⭐ Elite Tip

Your starting position should make your first movement feel natural. Do not overthink itβ€”stay balanced, relaxed, and ready to explode.

πŸ‘Ÿ The First Steps

The first few steps are where acceleration is created. Focus on powerful pushes rather than trying to take extremely fast steps.

Think:

Push β†’ Drive β†’ Push β†’ Accelerate

Keep your steps controlled and gradually allow your body to rise as you gain speed.

Avoid:

❌ Standing upright too early
❌ Taking tiny steps
❌ Looking down
❌ Tensing your shoulders

⭐ Elite Tip

Your first three steps should feel explosive and purposeful. Win the first few meters and you give yourself a chance to win the entire race.

πŸ’₯ Explosive Power

Acceleration depends on how quickly you can apply force to the ground. The harder and more efficiently you push, the faster your body can move forward.

Focus on:

βœ“ Powerful leg drive
βœ“ Strong arm movement
βœ“ Quick ground contact
βœ“ Forward body position
βœ“ Relaxed upper body

Your arms help create rhythm and momentum. Drive them naturally as your legs push you forward.

⭐ Elite Tip

Do not try to force every movement. Stay relaxed and let your legs and arms work together.

⚑ Acceleration Drill

Try this simple drill to improve your first steps.

1. Set Up
Place a cone 10 meters away.

2. Start
Begin from a balanced athletic position.

3. Explode
Drive forward and sprint toward the cone.

4. Finish
Run through the cone instead of slowing down before it.

5. Recover
Walk back and rest before repeating.

Complete 4–6 quality repetitions.

⭐ Elite Tip

Give every repetition your best effort. If you are too tired to accelerate properly, take more recovery.
